When enamel wears down or gums recede, the inner dentin layer is exposed. Tiny channels in dentin carry cold, heat or sour sensations straight to the nerve, causing that sharp twinge.
Possible causes
- Brushing hard with a stiff brush
- Receding gums
- Lots of acidic drinks and foods
- Grinding your teeth
- A cavity or cracked tooth
How to get relief
- Use a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth, every day
- Brush gently with a soft brush
- Cut down on fizzy drinks and sour foods
- Wait 30 minutes after acidic food before brushing
Treatment at the clinic
Fluoride varnish, desensitising agents or a filling over worn areas can greatly reduce sensitivity.
When to see a dentist
If the sensitivity lasts or is focused on one tooth, get it checked for a cavity or crack.
